I've been playing tabletop role-playing games since I was 8-years old, and I'm 23 as of the current date. I'm sure there are a lot of other people in AO (all us geeks!) that have either dabbled in such things or are still into them. Seeing as how I still play tabletop games, and have some experience playing in MUDs/MUSHes, I find this post of yours somewhat interesting.
Anarchy Online is, as a few other games, an MMORPG. Emphasis on the RPG...Role-Playing Game. *ahem* *cough cough cough* RPG!!
Unfortunately, the playerbase in AO is not as keen on in-character RP as some of us. Most of them are more interested in the other aspects of the game, and it's not something I blame them for. And, to be honest, I've noticed (and have been told several dozen times by others) that most people that talk of RP...are actually speaking of going to Reets and cyboring.
Which, of course, is not -true- RP. True RP would be coming up with some sort of backstory (even if it's just something tossed together in your head) for your character and trying to play your character as you feel he, she, or it (go Foesmite!) should be played. There are few...VERY few...characters that I have seen played this way. Elric (a 200 MA) is one of the ones that will stay with me my entire stay on Rubi-Ka, and I only met him late in my 'game life' in the Roller-Rats.
He has since moved on then. I won't pretend to know exactly why he quit, but I got the distinct impression that he was not happy being alone in his quest for RP in AO. After all, what's the fun of playing an RP character if no one (or very few even) will RP back at you?
It gets old...and I speak from some small experience. Back before I re-rolled all (yes ALL!) my characters I tried RPing a little bit. I had a Fixer, came up with a story for him (which is in the RP section still I believe here), and RPed him in Guild Chat and on teams etc.
I had some nice responses from my Guild, which is AWESOME, but when it came to the rest of Rubi-Ka...no response. What you might call 'dead water'. Because...as I said before...most people are more interested in playing the game for other aspects....-not- RP.
I haven't RPed much since then. It's fun at times, but I decided after my last RP character that if I want to really, truly RP a character...I'll go back to playing my MUDs and MUSHes. It may only be text-based, but it is VERY in-depth RP.
But...not one to deny others...if you ever want to RP in Guild Chat I will be more than happy to oblige and RP back. It is fun after all
