Life on Rubi-KA

„AO is nice place to play, but not to live”, after nearly a month of playing the game, this was my brother’s opinion. At first, I didn’t quite understand what he meant by “… to live”, the simplest conclusion was that your not suppose to live in it, it’s just a game. But after I gave it a few thoughts it came to me, that in some awkward way my little bro was right, that this virtual life issue was always there, I only didn’t notice it.

Now, I have written more on the matter but I would like to hear other people's opinions on your alter egos virtual life.

BTW, I would like to thank Lindbeck and Flameforge for supplying the game key used for creating an account for my bro. You guys rule!

if your brother refers to the appartments, i can assure you i havent lived much in mine

i see his point, but some of his issues may be solved with AI.

but ask my wife, she thinks i "live" too much in and for AO as it is

Whether you play the games as "yourself" or a completely "alter ego" (including roleplay) there always comes the matter of balance -- balancing gaming time with real-life responsibilities, relationships, health, etc. A sensitive matter for me... These levels of balances should be set by every individual. (Adherence to those levels is a completely different issue haha...)

But I think one can be thought to "live" in a virtual world by their time spent there, or "live" by way of roleplaying a character who "exists" in that world (even though the person may only play for short times).

Living your life. As in real life, that is a very induvidual perception. If real life was as easy to live as in AO, then I would call myself lucky to be alive. Money comes easy for everyone, and you can live your life in luxury without to much hard work. No two hour drive to get to work, eh Byrug? :D Employment for everyone. Just go down to mission terminal and get a job. 2 hours later you can roll around in creds. You have beggars here, but thats just cause they are lazy buggers, not because they are unfortunate, unlike most cases in RL. You got freedom of speach here, but if you dont like to listen to what they say, then you can just adjust your earimplant so that you dont have to listen to them.

So comparing AO to RL, Id say AO is a easy place to live

This is a game, it is meant to take you away from the everyday living of RL, is it 6h per day or just occasionally sometime. But the whole aspect is for me, a game for leisure...something to get me out of thinking work or everything else.
We all got a life, diverse and interesting or monotonic and boring...but thats the life what were made for ourselves.
I do not RP ingame, or i do it very seldom...it´s not in me or in my character, its hard to pretend im someone else
I however salute anyone whos capable of doing that, it shows extremendous imagination and imagination is what has brought us so far in evolution. Offcourse this game imagination is getting us nowhere further in the ferriswheel but that will help to think the RL issues in whole different aspect id think.

Whew, i got way too far with the filosofics here...excuse teh french mates

...Id so much like to just play now, and forget the RL issues for sometime. But when the shit hits the fan, no one should just turn away and try to pretend it´ll blow away if i live in whole different realm for a while...

And this exactly why I wanted to hear you guys out first. My conclusions on the matter are some what different. Life on Rubi-Ka is way to easy, it’s a fact that we (the players) are responsible for this. Ok, first thing first, the chars don’t need too eat, sleep (rest), they don’t require relaxation and so on. You would be right to say that this is left for the role-playing part of the game, but it’s kind of surprising for new players. The same goes for the feel of the world, work comes easy , as Selavi noticed, money and equipment as well, true that you have sweat a bit to get the really nice stuff, but until lvl 100, the game offers no real challenge.

Off topic:
And about that 2 h drive to work, I didn’t get my contract prolonged, which is sort of better because I would have to quit with this months end (last year of college begins).
