This picture was taken a number of years ago about 10 miles west of my hometown in Germany.
I come from a region where they mine brown coal in huge pits. They use these mobile excavators for the job. They are up too 210 feet high, one cup of their rotating excavator fits a sedan, and their tracks are as high as a semi.
This particular excavator was moved from a mining pit (1200 feet deep, 3 miles wide) to another, newer pit. It takes roughly 30 years from beginning of prospecting to closing the pit. The thing shown in the picture had to be moved roughly 30 miles overland. They had to unhook overland power lines to let it pass, had to cover streets with heavy rubbermats and had to level a lot of ground to prepare a halfway even track.
In winter, they actually adorn these monsters with a christmas tree at the very tip. Looks cute.
