Hm, does this mean the expansion will become a required purchase to continue playing? Or will it just be an option for people?

As far as I know it's only an option.
If you buy the pack you will get access to new places etc, if you don't buy it, you won't.

But it's far to early to say anything, since it's not released before 4q
