Map Navigation

Postby Kicktopps » Mon Sep 15, 2003 5:18 am

Well it happened... I spent IP on Map Nav, thinking I would be able to reset it. Well later I found out that this is the only skill that cannot be reset. I have emailed Funcom, but I'm not sure how much of a response I will get.

I am hoping though, with enough support, we can all get Funcom to put this information in the map nav description, or give some sort of pop-up warning. I just don't want to see someone else make the same mistake I did.

I am not sure what will happen to Kicktopps, but there is a lot of lost/wasted IP now in map nav for my level.

Well, if nothing comes from your email to FC or petition, it won't be any trouble for the rest of us to at the very least, add to your words with emails and messages of our own. Agreed, if nothing comes of your situation with Kicktopps, it might be of help to others in the future.

Please keep us posted as to the outcome of this and we can help you get a result. Wasted ip is a BIG thing, especially when it's as irreversable as the map nav skill. The reset was stopped a long time ago for exactly the same reason you have used it today but without patch notes from yesteryear, more people will be making this mistake. Good luck on this and I hope Funcom get back to you quickly :)

This is what I got from Funcom today

You are not allowed to even waste an IP on the Map skill so when it
told you that you cannot use an IPR on the skill you did not lose a
point. It should still be in your pool. If it isn't, then petition a GM.

Either I wasn't clear in my first email, but this is something that is less important to me, then the actual IP I spent in it after re-setting other skills. I have also tried to do a petition, but after 5 hours and 40 minuets of waiting, I've decided to give up on that.

OK, it looks like either you wasn't clear in your email or this guy has misunderstood. I suggest you reply to that email obviously including the original email there and stating that you are not tryin to ip reset Map Nav because you know full well it cannot be reset but only found out after after you reset other skills to raise it. Your request is to be able to reset the map nav skill because you were not aware that this skill could be reset once raised. The waste of ip points compared to your time played in game makes this extremely important and noone should have to live with a gimped skill which is completey irreversable. FC have in the past reset a completely accidentally deleted character, I've seen it done. There is no reason why they can't do this for you.

Please... you must keep trying

I see what you are saying. Unfortunately you can not get back the spent IP on the map skill. I am sorry.

This is what I got back from Funcom today. And this was my response:

To my character those points are very important at my level of 130. I ended up re-setting other skills in order to have enough IP points to max out my map nav. I then thought I would be able to get these IP points back. I had no warning that Map Navigation was the only skill NOT re-settable. My character is no gimped due to a simple game fact that was left out by Funcom. My time spent on this character is now wasted because she will never reach her full potential. I was hoping that you may be able to reset my character to the last patch, or something similar to that. If this is not possible please, I repeat, Please update the description of map nav. so that others will not make the same mistake it did. I feel that this could have been avoided only if Funcom had some sort of information to new and existing players that Map Navigation is NOT re-settable.

I'm not sure where to go from here, but if everyone else could maybe email Funcom. Telling them to update the Map Navigation information, so that it is known to everyone. This would hopefully prevent others from doing the same mistake I did.

I am sorry but the only reason people max out their map skill is to
cheat the system and get all the maps loaded on their character. That
is why you cannot reset it. I am sorry you were unaware of this fact
but it does not change the situtation. It is common knowledge in game.
We will not reimburse you those IP points. You will simply have to work
around it now. If you want to plead your case to a GM, you can
petition, but you will recieve no reimbursal form email support. I am
sorry.

I'm not sure what to do now. I could try to petition again, but I'm sure it will be like last time. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I feel for your loss of IP Kick, but it seems you have reached a dead end here and the IP is lost :( I quite agree that it should say somewhere that Map skill cant be reset, even though it would be a rather obvious exploit should it work. I hope you are able to work around this as the ARK pointed out. Because, what would RK be without Kicktopps?

Especially the Kicktopps in that blue underw--

I'm gonna write myself a note to email FC Feedback. "Common knowledge" is not an acceptable excuse. Like has been said, there needs to be a note in the MapNav skill description or a warning of some kind.

I agree with the above. I too will write a note in support for this. I had a feeling FC response would be similiar to what you had but if this isnt resolved, more and more people will suffer due to this 'common knowledge' not being widely known.

*sigh* as far as Kicktopps goes, it's your call. Can you work around it?

what I don't get is why should be exploit if you upload all maps?
Maps are ingame to be used...no lvl restriction, no profesional restriction and apart start-up maps no side restriction....
What's even more bizzare is that there are zone for which maps don't even exists...
To my knowledge Map navigation is only non-resetable skill....with such knowledge base as player must posess even if he/she knows that might forget at time when he/she is able to max this skill...
What Fc stats time and again is that it wants feedback...and then it trows that feedback in trash....why?

This suxxorz.

I was the one that first suggested it to Kicktopps (my real life roomie) in the hopes that we might somehow get all the maps uploaded without having to worry about spending SO much IP in one area. I realized it was cutting corners, but I did not realize that FC had put a block on resetting said IP from MapNav.

I'm going to send some feedback to FC as well about MapNav needing a "WARNING: IP NOT RESETTABLE!" in the description of the skill. That'd be SOMETHING at least. Better than just ignoring people because they didn't read all the umteen billion threads and posts on the AO Official Forums. *sigh*

[quote="trgeorge"]what I don't get is why should be exploit if you upload all maps?quote]

I think it would be considered an exploit of the game mechanics if you were to max your map skills to upload all the maps, and later reset that skill and still keep the maps. They should instead make the chr. do a mapskillcheck each time he zoned into an area instead. Not having proper skill would make your map go *poof* until skill is raised again. But as it is now, I truly beleive that some information about the skill not being resetable should be implemented. not everyone got the time to spend hours on the forum finding the right thread. I would guess that doing a search on "mapskill" would give a little more than 1 hit. :-?

I agree, Selavi. So...I believe those are the two points we should get across in our e-mails to Feeback.

1) Put something in the notes of 'MapNav' to warn people that the IP is NOT resettable.

2) Not everyone has hours to spend searching the AO Forums to find this 'common knowledge'. Maybe they should do some sort of sticky?

That's what I'll be putting in my e-mail. Going to make a note to type it up soon as I get home from work tomorrow.

:D :D
It brings a tear to my eye with all the support you've given me. My next plan is to post something on most of the EG Guild pages... maybe just to redirect them to my situation and hope that they will be inspired to send a note to Funcom.
No word from a GM because I haven't been able to stay online for more then 6 hours :-?
