OK, guys, I have a problem !!!!!!!!

I sat the lil guy down the other night before dinner and we did the spelling thing :))) w00t, I love letters and words but thats selfish, I'm doing it for my son so.......

I think I've really messed things up. I was trying to explain the sound of the beginning letter of a word so I used the letter 'U' as an example.

'Leon, U is for under, uuuunder'

'U is for up, uuuuup' and so on. We were doing really well and then I changed the letter to see if he could do it on his own.

'mmmmmark, mmmmmummy, now Leon, what does mmmmummy begin with'

answer 'U' :((((((

So I tried again and again and everything begins with U :(((

Two nights later and I do it again and he wont forget the letter U. aaarrgh !!

Well, that is an old strategy which doesn't work well bud. I know, my little nephew and niece live with me and my wife.

The younger one is 3, and she is working on her ABC's, and that is where you got to start.

First you need to be 100% sure they know the letters separately before you introduce words.

Get yourself one of those fun ABC Tables with animals on it, kids like those (most of them do anyways).

Work for the next month so that the kid knows A to Z, it can be done with daily lessons, 1 hour each. I say 1 hour, because kids have a short attention span, and it takes a long time to get them to listen =P

Once YOU are sure your child has the ABC's mastered, then start working on words, from A to Z, in alphabetical order, making it easier since he learned the letters in the same order.

The words will take longer, probably 2-3 months if daily lessons are done. Make EVERYTHING a word game once he's got a good number of words in his little head. Start will small words like dog, cat, bird...best place for this is the local pet shop (which may backfire if he won't leave the store without a pet mind you).

Once the medium to large words come into play, you'll need flashcards, and ask him what word you're showing him.

This whole reading process is not as easy as advertised on TV, damn commercials!

What will come after learning words, is spelling. Since you taught him the ABC's from the beggining, and knows each letter, this part will be much easier than the previous two.

Within 6 months, you may have a spelling bee champion, if you can keep up, kids have more energy than an adult (which I still can't figure out, how my niece can outrun me and start jumping on my back for an hour as a sign of victory over my ass).

That's my 2 cents.

But, I do appreciate you goin into all that detail :) My quest wasnt to introduce letters as such, I'm gettin him to just use sounds for now. Cmdr needs to come round to my house methinks and f/p teacher with me hehe. Thanks for spending the time to detail that, my friend.
