Civilisation and UFO

Postby Selavi » Sat Nov 05, 2005 12:52 am

Been absent for a wee while. Just got both UFO aftershock and civilisation 4 installed on my puter. Second one being something I have been looking forward to since I first learned it was gonna be released. So not gone, just not being able to draw my attention away from those games. Wich btw are meeting all my expectations and then some :P

What Fury said. Some new stuff introduced into the mist of the old stuff realy. They introduced religion, wich I first thought would create some real debates. But one religion isnt gonna give you any different bonuses over another. Then again, you can use religion to start a war...;) "If you dont beleive in the same shit that I do, Ill come and whop your ass".
New units, new techs and a whole lot of new things for your workers decorate the landscape with. And the introduction of multiplayer seems intriguing.

Overall a good game imo, but I am a sucker for the genre and spent more hours than I dare remember on the earlier versions.

UFO Aftershock any good? I haven't heard about that one yet. Aftermath wasn't that good, bout time they made a good one to rival Apocalypse in great gameplay, or even the original UFO.

Haven't played Civ 4 yet, don't dare, just incase I never see AO again :P

I was (and still am) a massive fan of the original UFO series, including Interceptor. I spent two years looking for the novel which introduced the original and used a small family company down south to get a copy. 18 months later, they tracked one down in Dallas US and I grabbed it. Most difficult our of print book I’ve ever had to find and a fantastic novel.

What was it called? I have called XCOM: Ufo Defense. Which is pretty dam good, really enjoyed it alot since it was based totally on the original UFO.

That’s the one. It went out of print a long time ago and I couldn’t for the life of me get hold of a copy in paperback. Scoured every second hand bookstore that year, contacted the friggin publishers and no joy. In the end, I just gave up and then got a call telling me the company I called last had found one for me.

I like Ethereals and they way they’re described in the book, psionic attacks and so on.

Super games they are. When I first completed the original Enemy Unknown, I had a female soldier in my org who was the only member to start from the beginning, survive and she was the one who got to the Mars control room. Absolute superhero she was :p

Hehe, I can't remember where I got that book from, but I think I got it for free brand new  :D/

Yeah, the original game was sooooooo good, me and my brother played it for months and months, unfortunately since we only had an Amiga at that time, the game was hideously laggy and would freeze up on the tactical missions, and made it unplayable.

Still, considering how long we played it for and the nasty bugs, it's a testament to how good the game was :D

XCOM: Apocalypse was awesome though, I loved that game from beginning to end, gonna replay it again sometime. Dimension Armour ftw!

Well not sure if you ever had a ZX Spectrum but the original X-COM was actually called Laser Squad. Was by the same people. X-COM was destined to be the sequel to Laser Squad but then all the ideas came about to include an Extra Terrestrial Combat Unit and alien invasions ;) I did find Terror From The Deep so much tougher than the original though…. Those artefact sites used to annoy the hell out of me.

Yea, I was showing Lia Apocalypse when she came to my parents cos all my old games are still at their place, shoved in an old wardrobe there ;) Apocalypse was good because it introduced real time strategy to the series (even though I still think turn based is by far the best way to play)

Found that UFO aftershock was sort of back to basics. You now research and manufactor the weapons, armor, ammo and droids. And with the amount of stuff you can research this time, you wont even find out everything before end of game..."Should I concentrate on regular firearms, or should I just concetrate on energy weapons...Implants for the cyborgs, or psi weapons for my psychics...nah, Ill concentrate on making more room in my landingcraft so that I can go D-Day on those aliens" But like with most games, it was released with a few bugs alas. So put it away for now until a patch comes. But if your a sucker for Xcom, then definatly get this title.

Yeah I had Laser Squad, that game rocked :D Gollop brothers ftw! Chaos ftw! (best speccy game ever)

Rebelstar 1&2 were good as well, damned fine games :)

Hehe, the best thing about Apocalypse IMO was the fact you could do Real Time missions, I loved those, dead handy for those cannon fodder missions where you could speed up the time and let the aliens come to you :) I used Turn Based on the alien planet though, extremely difficult without TB option, hehe.

I played a demo of Terror from the Deep, but never got into it. I have the game, just haven't installed it :P

Damn you Jpegg for posting while I still write :P But perhaps I should add that there arent any turnbased combat in this version either, like with aftermath. But personaly dont mind all that much, since you can pause with space button all the time if things start to get out of hand. Also adjust the speed. Still...I do miss how you could blow up almost entire buildings like you did in X-com, and bury the suckers inside in a pile of debree. But dont worry, there are plenty of stuff for you to pull out of the hat to create mayhem with. Finnaly they introduced some real machineguns....

Yea, in Apoc, it was nice to be able to freeze it all, then set way points for the men, have them crouch, shoot, move and then cover each other before starting the gameplay again. And yea, the things collapsing was mega fun :)

I guess this is a game I’m gonna need to get hold of

Looking forward to tons and tons of research and manufacture possibilities, the more there are the better imo

Will grab it when it drops in price :)
