Stranded yet again!

Postby pakse » Wed Aug 25, 2010 11:56 pm

I have ordered a new computer... The old one has decided to retire for good now. Hope I get it within a few days so I can get back to a normal life :P

Definetly retired for good. It hangs up after like 5 mins. It has been time for an upgrade for years already so now is the time :P.

See you in a few days!

It sounds like there's only one component broken if computes is still working that well. Maybe PSU, motherboard, hard drive or memories.. My first suggestion would be to check electrolyte capasitors on motherboard and PSU for leaks or swelling. (That is if you're trying to fix it by changing parts...) Crappy capasitors are propably the biggest reason for broken electronics...

I have run my memories through tests without a problem, dont know about the rest. The motherboard was an emergency buy when the other one was broken. As I had little money it became a demo version ;). Not the best buy maybe.PSU is as old as the computer as well, so viable target for accusation... I guess the whole damn computer is a target for accusation now when I think bout it... ;)

Thanx for the pic Uku. I will check my motherboard for that just for the sake of it.

The leaking or bulging can usually be seen on the top of the capasitor. Top should be flat.

More info and pictures about the "capasitor plague" can be found in Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor_plague.

You are here and now my official house God Uku! Two of those cap things where not flat anymore on the motherboard (Right next to the processor). And they where a little black on top as well. Off to heaven for that one and may it rest in piece!

If those two caps are all that is causing the problem (and they haven't led to secondary failures) then it is repairable. To be honest, I love the rogue capacitors, without them the repair industry would lose a large chunk of revenue.

Well, maybe it is repairable but the things I am using is AMD socket 939, DDR2 mems, and so on. I use PCI express graphics at least. These things where hot a few years back but I can tell you that it is not sexy anymore :P.
