Read this and think carefully of who you share your account info to. http://web.sysrq.no/maniac/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=6763

Looks from this thread that we are about to loose one of the most colourful persons in AO :(

It shows that there's always somebody out there with no respect for other people - common knowledge really, but unfortunately the rest of us need constant reminders like this to rememember to take measures agains sush d#"¤heads.

1. NEVER share ANY account info with other people. Not even your wife close family, unless you want to risk an argument about mis-spent IP points, lost items and credits (we all know how chicks like spending dollahs) ;p
2. Take measures to ensure such info does not get shared accidentally
3. NEVER enable auto-type password functionality in any program. This means that the password is being stored in a file, somewhere on your hard drive. Hackers know where to look for these files.
4. NEVER store your passwords on a system that has an internet or localnet connection.
5. Never install software you don't trust on a system that also contains personal information you want to protect.
6. DO install a firewall product and learn how to configure it. ZoneAlarm, Kerio, Norton and others will do in most cases.
7. IF you must install file sharing software, make sure you limit the sharing to specified folders that don't contain anything you don't want to loose.

The following quotes from the thread sum up some of the dangers that lurk:

Hmm, i know how to get the account information. As my parrent closed my account and i can't own a credit card since im under 18 years, I was looking for the possibility of playing for free. I searched the ao folder and found this special file: C:\Program Files\Anarchy Online Test\cd_image\data\launcher\anarchylauncher.prefs

If you replace this file with another (from another person) you get their account name and password (the password will be in ****)
With a simple program you can remove the masks and then you got both loggin and password.

I sent a e-mail to funcom about this problem. They said they would be looking into it.

About a month later I tried to check if they had fixed the problem. I went to a fileshare program (Direct connect). And offcoures i found lots of files (account). One of them was Deacons account, i sent him a warning that that i had obatined this account information. Offcoures he got upset and i got some flames but after all he changed his account information.
I'm sure I wasn't the only one able to access his account.

Now I was checking the latest news in strom and saw this threat, i thought this information might help.

At last, all people here SHOULD NOT share the C:\Program Files\Anarchy Online Test\cd_image\data\launcher\anarchylauncher.prefs , unless you want others to play on your accont.

If you of some reason must share this file, god knows why, then remove the check on remember password. That would also put a stop unwanted helpers.

Probably using a trojan, thats why "he" needs your email. If you use outlook express as your email program remember to turn off autopreview...Having an uptodate antivirus program is also a good idea.

Just a few tips:

NEVER open attachments in email that you dont know who is from or what it might be.

trojans that might be used for hacking AO accounts are like keyloggers and similar like backorifice etc.

Also get a personal firewall, zonealarm is a good choice. If it detects anyone trying to hack your computer it will make a log you can file to his ISP and most likely he will loose his internet line unless the ISP is unserious.

Hacking others people computer and accounts is a serious issue, and if Funcom lets hackers walk free they are not a very serious company imo. It is infact illegal by the law (rl law not the stupid mmorpg law).

Hmmm...I've known about the anarchylauncher.prefs file for a long time in doing that trick. Since about the time I started playing over 2 years ago...that one was sort of obvious. There are a few other ways to get the password too...some of which are very simple and can be done remotely in some instances (got a firewall?). Your IP address can be found in the headers of an email sent from you...which Deacon, this is probably the reason he wanted you to email him.

I didn't think about searching those p2p sharing programs for the files though...lots of those programs want to just share about everything...which yea, would be a problem. That's a good warning for those of you who might want to run Kazaa, DC++, etc...make sure you know exactly what you are sharing.

This is exactly what I was getting at yesterday, on guild channel. Please make sure you untick the "Save password" box in the login screen when you log into AO. A simple, but effective precaution.

Also, change your AO password regularly. Easily done on the AO official site account login https://register.funcom.com/

Allthough thinking that not saving your AO password in your computer is safe , The reality of It is yes it can be safer But if somone is specificly trying to hack your account A keylogger is far easier to write than program that could copy a file that is encrypted and send it over the internet. So on that note just be safe with your account information. If anyone that has enough knowledge wants into your computer for any specific reason as to steal your account or any information, they neeed very minimal information about you to do it. I personally have found worms that run on nothing but scripts are self replicating and the first thing they do is eat your virus software and your firewall software just leaving a shell.
I think that Over the past few months FC has overlooked what really matters their players and that without them there is no Rubi-Ka. I'm sure all of you have waited 6+ hours for petitions. If FC doesnt clean there act up and get back there great reputation that imo for a shortwhile they once had I can see all of us leaving at the begining of next year when A wave of new MMo's come out

Back on topic of Deac getting banned...WTF! is going on at FC? now i hear Amona has been banned! Over these last 2 years of playing AO and reading the forums i've learned that you NEVER cross Genevra. What will it take for Funcom to fire this person? She's the one who decided that the backdoor to Smugglers was an exploit, and now she's banned Amona for playing on her fiance's account. I know Deacons' suspension from the forums has nothing to do with Genevra, it seems like all the head honchos at FC have this attitude!! /vent off

whew, that feels a little better :P

Deac was banned from the forums for trying to warn people about a hacker named Stindy. they also banned Stromm for voicing his reason for leaving AO. and there is also the whole Meister "scandal" in which he didn't get banned(at least not that i know of). you gotta love how FC treats it customers. oh well, see u all in FF XI, then WoW and ultimately the game Storm moves to :D

Well.. I have been trying to refrain from posting but hey ho, here goes. :)

1) The Deacon. A lot of respect for thedeacon but he should not have posted Stindy's name. It _is_ against the guidelines so FC were justified in acting like they did (note, I do think they over-reacted but then they _did_ lift his ban)

2) Amona. Again a huge amount of respect for Amona and what she has done for the commmunity, but if you read the chat logs between her and Cz/Fadinaway then the simple asnwer is she made the situation MUCH worse by going public in such a pectacular fashion based on some 'leaked' info from an ARK (i.e. player). If she hadn't her account would almost definitely be fine.

3) The Storm threads. Fine, it is a place to vent steam, but the PM that Hajk refers to was me. Saying people need their house burned down/should be killed in an accident is appalling and shameful.

Basically I am saying, yes FC could have handled it better but generally I think the community have over-reacted.

Just read the Storm threads and am still shaking my head. Yeah I wonder why those threads aren't allowed on the official forums - NOT. Certainly not something I'd want on those forums at least. It's just childish and non-constructive. It's ok to vent a bit from time to time, but looked more like how the Ku Klux Klan would work to me.

hmmm ... you are calling us KKK? don't you think that is a bit extreme. do you know why alot of members in Storm are angry? if you had your friends banned in the past for lesser things i think you would be upset too. but everyone is titled to their opinion. as for me and my friends being staunched racisits ... well i seriously doubt we are that. we don't sit here and hang people. we don't go and kill people because they are not White Anglo Saxon Protestants. we don't burn crosses in front of people's lawns. though i do suggest that before you start name calling and saying we are this and that, please don't do the same thing you claim we are doin. You have to remeber that generalizing one group and putting them in a negative view is IS "childish and non-constructive". also calling minorities KKK is highly offensive.

just a word of advice. cheers.

P.S. i think i am done posting here.

I wasn't saying that you were the KKK. I was reminded of a lynchmob that wasn't prepared to do anything constructive, but rather hang Meister, FC and everyone else that bothered you. I do agree that Meister shouldn't have done what he did, but there are other ways to handle this matter than such a thread. And FC would just delete any thread that looked like this on the forums because no good would come from it.

I'm sorry you were upset by this and thought I called you the KKK, but again I was more thinking of how a lynchmob would work in any given situation. You might have lost a few friends for lesser things, but that'd always depend on who's looking at it. Meister should probably have gotten a ban out of it, or FC should have given an official explanation, but still screaming, ranting and raving about it won't do much good. Nor will saying insulting things about a player or the developers/community mangers at FC.
